Phuket's background and history

HISTORY

switchblade IDSThe earliest evidence of man in the Phuket region was recorded in ancient cave paintings found north of Phuket at Takua Pa, as well as in the bays of Phangnga and Krabi. It is believed that the island’s earliest inhabitants were known as “sea gypsies” who were semi-normadic seamen in origin, pirating the Andaman waters and battling with one another for slaves and spoils. Today, their descendents can still be found in Phuket where they have permanently settled on poor, unsanitary village located at Rawai Beach, through they do not display fierce characteristics and instead fish for a livelihood.

The first written record of Phuket’s history dates from the 13th century, when the Thais defeated the Khmers. During that era, Phuket was known as “Junkceylon” and was prospering from increasing trade from it’s tin mines.

The first mention of European travelers dates back to 1511, when trade began with foreign countries. The Dutch traders started their trading post in 1626. British East India Trading Company took up residence in 1770, but decided to choose Penang (Malaysia) as their base, saving Phuket from becoming a British Colony.

In 1767, the Burmese invaded Phuket though victory was short lived. Thanks to two sisters, Chan and Mook, who to this day, are revered as Phuket’s greatest heroines. Chan and Mook bravely organized defenses and rallied their people so well that the enemy’s will was eventually broken. A statue honouring this courageous pair now stands at the crossroads in Thalang District.

The Burmese pillaged Phuket three more times between 1809 – 1812, when King Rama was new to the throne. However, armed forces arrived from Bangkok in time to repel further onslaught. Finally, Burma’s capitulation to the British saw an end to further Burmese invasions of Thailand.

As the dust settled, a gradual influx of mainland Thais and Chinese immigrants from China and Malaysia, helped add to the ethnic mix, creating a distinctive character of the people who gives Phuket it’s own special charm you see today.
